Lansing, MI – Locally owned Michigan Agricultural Commodities, Inc. (MAC) would like to announce that it will be participating in the Stand-Up for Grain Engulfment Prevention Week of Awareness, April 9th-13th, sponsored by National Grain and Feed Association (NGFA), Grain Elevator and Processing Society (GEAPS), and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) through the Alliance Program. During this week, locations across the nation, including MAC will be focusing on worker protection and ways to reduce injuries and prevent fatalities from engulfment or activities related to working around grain bins.
Suffocation from engulfment is a leading cause of death in grain bins, with the number continuing to rise. However, these fatalities are preventable. There are numerous OSHA and industry resources available to assist in preventing incidents. As the largest grain handler in the state of Michigan, safety remains a top priority. We intend to keep our employees safe, as well as share information that can help our customers do the same.
On Wednesday, April 11th, 2018 at 9 am, every one of our facilities will host a Safety Stand-Up (Down). This Stand-Up (Down) will have two purposes: to remember all those who have lost their lives in bin incidents and to talk directly about the importance of safety in our workplace. All work activities will cease for a brief Toolbox Talk to discuss hazards and the importance of prevention. This talk will focus on Lockout Tagout procedures.
We invite all farmers to join us for this Safety Stand-Up (Down) and training at their local facility. All facilities will begin with the Toolbox Talk in their office, and most will have an on-site engulfment training activity as well.
We ask for your patience as work activities are put on hold briefly for this important safety activity and we are eager for the opportunity to have you join us for this critical task.
MAC is a privately held corporation, which buys, sells, and stores agricultural commodities throughout the United States and Canada. Today, MAC is Michigan’s largest grain handler with eight elevators, almost 43 million bushels of storage and over 100 employees. Facility ownership, trading offices and international connections give MAC uncommon flexibility with unique opportunities. Learn more at www.michag.com
